He kind of has that stance?
I felt like colouring a concept I did for a character ages ago. I ended up changing how he looks a bit when I painted on top, the colours are also a bit random. Basically just testing myself with this drawing! I wanted to do a simple colour study of a character rather than a environment setting.

After creating tonal pieces of work for our world project we were then assigned the task of creating environment drawings with colour. These where to be shots of the world from different perspectives and to include characters in some for scale. It was suggested that we find a middle colour first and paint our own gradient- this was mainly what I did as well as base my colour palette off the work my team mates did. For the smalls world I had a harder time trying to figure out how to incorporate the different shades of colour, basically because their world is so clustered and full of buildings. The first digital drawing I ended up doing looked very dark and gloomy.. it almost looks like a prison sitting on the edge of a cliff. So, I tried again, this time using brighter blues and some greens. I also threw in a bit of pink just for variation and because I thought it fitted with the rest of the colours aesthetically. The third piece was a bit of a mess, I didn't really like where I was going with it
Considering we aren't quite decided on what the Midis environment should be like, I experimented with the idea of a desert. I used a clash of yellow and turquoise type blue with a red moon standing out. To be honest I quite like how this drawing turned out considering it was just a quick combination. For the others, I went with my groups idea of a forest, the first being a Midi onlooking at the Smalls city, I went for a mixture of warm and cool colours on this one. The second I stuck to a green colour palette only and used black and white if I needed to darker or highlight certain areas. With the colours I used I tried to give the sense that the Midis land is very peaceful and quiet as well as being quite beautiful. I got this inspiration from the work my team member Nuala did for one of her colour studies which can be viewed here.
Moving on from tonal studies we are starting to look at adding colour to our work! Without references my colouring can be a bit all over the show but most of the time I end up using a colour wheel I have. I casually took this from a paint store (paint for houses and walls.. not even art) ages ago and constantly use it when I'm colouring. I find the back part most useful as it shows colours that complement each other best. Again I ended up looking at Jordan Buckner's art, because not only does he do really good tonal studies, he is also very talented at creating environments using colour. He's able to take one colour and create an entire scene using it simply by changing thr tone or shade. You can also get a really good sense of atmoshpere from his drawings. I particularly like the first image I've shown of his work as it reminds me of one of our characters, a Big, standing in valley. Another artist I looked at is Sung Chaio (their art can be seen here http://www.sung-choi.com/gallery/). The art in their gallery are finished pieces and are incredibly detailed but when looking at it in terms of colour you could compare pieces in relation to warm and cool colours. They use this technique to help set the tone for their drawings. |
