From 26/09/2016 to 16/12/16 I have completed my first semester studying Animation. It has been a challenging few months but I feel I quickly learnt to adapt and involve myself more in the course. The course has allowed me explore and research more of the artistic world along with lectures Michael and Conánn giving their own personal experiences of the animation industry. I also feel a lot more comfortable using programs like Maya, usually I would find 3D modelling difficult or confusing but with the help of my classmates and by listening to tutorials by lecturers I’ve gotten a lot more confident.
Despite the course being stressful at times it was structured and informative. Each week, the lessons would be relevant to the tasks we were working on, we would go into great depth about the subjects we were looking at. For example, when looking at Colour Studies our class could spend hours just talking about one artist, their work, and how they use colour palettes. Everyone in the class is eager to share ideas or an artist’s work they find useful to look at, I feel it’s also good to see what other people in the class our working on as it can inspire others, I did for me anyway. Personally, I feel these classes benefited me greatly and gave me a better insight on how to approach tasks or how I should tackle a piece of work. Sometimes, considering the class would usually be a group discussion, it would even make me look at things from a different perspective. I can also see my improvement from our Life Drawing classes. This was something totally new to me and looking back on my sketches and my own personal work I can see how useful and beneficial the classes have become. It has not only given me a better understanding of the human body and anatomy but has also helped me to include structure to my drawings. The course has also shown me the advantages and challenges of working in groups. It has allowed me to become more flexible when working with people but also prove myself as an individual and show the efforts I put into and contribute to a group. Along with the group work I feel my presentation skills have gotten a lot better. I’m not usually a very nervous person but when it comes to presenting I can sometimes get a bit flustered and mess my words up. Given that our entire class is like a family I don’t have that problem. That is also another important factor to note about the course, everyone can communicate and get along with one another, everyone is nice and supportive which is hard to say for most classes. If someone needs help with something or shown how to do something, if no lecturers are around, someone from the class will always be there to help. I’ve learnt a lot throughout this course so far and made some amazing friends along the way (cheesy, I know), I’m looking forward to next semester!
