Reflection of Semester 1
At the beginning of the semester I particular enjoyed the first project we had been given to work on. Coming up with a 3D environment allowed me to practice my concept art and improve my perspective drawing as well as giving our group an opportunity to develop some sort of narrative for our scene. It was very stressful yet very valuable learning exercise which also helped me develop new 3D modelling skills. It gave me the opportunity to work on creating models with a lower poly count as well as trying to improve on my mesh topology- as I tend to make errors without noticing. Daunting as UV wrapping was and still is, I feel more confident now that I can actually understand the tools in Maya which will help me UV wrap in a less time consuming way. Through tutorials in class and doing my own research I no longer find UV wrapping to be as difficult.
My team where extremely helpful throughout the 3D environment project and everyone's contributions really pulled the final scene together in the end. I feel like we achieved the tone and atmosphere we set out for our science lab, along with the narrative which can be seen through the layout of the room. Working with motivated people helped to inspire me to the best with my work and really get involved in the project.
I also really enjoyed working on the body mechanics animation- being able to bring a character to life through simple motions or even complex ones. I found it interesting to work as I explored different characteristics of a walk cycle and how different motions in the hips or flicks of the hand can really lend to tell a bit about the characters personality. I used lots of video references and even myself in the mirror to get a better understanding of how limbs move and how to apply this to a 3D animation. I also had the chance to apply the principles of animation and other animation techniques into my work- I had good fun working with the model!
In conclusion I feel I learnt a lot in the last few months and everything will help to improve my work over time. I need to do better at overcoming difficult situations and not let others put my ideas down or disrupt my workflow- from working on previous projects and with different teams I know I am capable of producing a good quality of work no matter what the situation.
