For this project our group is working with the Studio MashMob (under Jude) to create a short trailer based off a full length script. First, I put together moodboards based off theme, left side resembling reality and the right side drug, drink, dream sequences. We particularity focused on work that had ink or watercolour effects in in. Moodboards
Along with the research and moodboards I threw together some concepts of things that stood out to me in the script- things that could potentially be used in our trailer. I was also playing around with some ideas on what kind of style and design we should go for- this included some visuals for how the dream sequence might look. When then put together a few rough scripts for how we wanted the trailer to be- 2 minutes is long enough to animated so we were also advised to make a shorter version of the script.
We agreed on the idea of having the character (Alan) being in a doctors office throughout the entire trailer, and in the middle section there would be intense flashbacks to things that happen in the script along with dream sequence parts (Alan's reoccurring nightmare)

To see what script worked best we put two storyboards together. The short version and the long version. I worked on the longer version which can be seen below: Short version: We were given the all clear to go with the short version- it would be more time effect and we would (hopefully) produce a better quality of work. Though we decided to implement some scenes from the longer script into the short script based off Jude's advice. After agreeing on a general layout for a new storyboard we put together a animatic to see how it worked: Below are the scenes I contributed to the animatic: We've split the work among us and I will be working on the 2D animation for the dream sequence part. While I'm working on the 2D, Charlotte is to model out a background for me to work with once I've finished. I started by doing a run cycle for Alan. (His design is based off concepts by Rose) Reference I used: Below are concepts I did previously for how the forest might look ..which we later ended up using. With these concepts I also did a very rough test to see how it would look with someone running. It's also the first time I attempted parallax scrolling on After Effects. Jude really wanted to see what Alan's run cycle animation would like on top of the 3D, and because Charlotte hadn't given me anything to work with at this time I did some rough tree models with basic textures. Trying to figure out what the atmosphere should be like: Seeing what other textures might work well (though we went with my original ones): Below is a test of the 2D and 3D together: Also did some different colour renders, just so we could present a few different options. (Jude liked No.2 the most and advised me to add a chromatic effect on the final version) Because Charlotte never gave me the background or models to work with I had to very quickly model my own set of trees and texture them, which can bee seen below: David provide me with a ground texture and I then set up a camera to render out: Below are the final renders without FX: I feel like a better background would've made this look better but me and David had to work a bit last minute.
Crane scene was pretty simple, initially we where going to have it as a still shot but Jude wanted us to include some slight camera movement. Deciding on composition: Decided to keep it in the middle: Changing colour to see what looked good with rest of animation: Again I didn't receive this 3D background from Charlotte in time to present to Jude so David made it for me. Before rendering out 2D and 3D: I rendered out the movement for the background, I also found it difficult figuring out how to move the 2D so it matched.. so it kind of stutters. Final render before FX: I used myself as reference for how the character Stephanie should swing the burning branch, below is the rough sketch: Once I got the flat colours in I spent a lot of time on extra details like shading and lighting.. and the firey parts on the branch. This scene happens pretty fast so it will touched up in After Effects. I also put together the scene where Emma is arching her back and foaming at the mouth. Once I had the fire it was pretty simple. Below is the fire effect I made on After Effects: Below is a test of the 2D and background together (still needs touched up) Probably the most difficult scene. Alan falling off a cliff and the Banshee rising up from smoke. First I needed a design for the banshee, below is one I made way earlier on in the project: Jude liked this simple design so I made a proper reference sheet for it and we stuck with the one on the left. In earlier animatics it looks like Alan just runs off the cliff or jumps to his death put he's actually trips and falls backwards. So I had to figure out a way of animating this. At this point I still hadn't received anything from Charlotte so I made a rough 3D model set-up so I could figure out what way the camera moves. Below are some tests I did on how this scene might look. Jude preferred the one on the right so that's the one I went with.
Below is the 2D animation for Alan tripping. I wanted his movements to be some what believable. There a lot I would've liked to touch up with this animation eg. his hands, the colour goes over the lines in some frames. And if my hands weren't tied for time I would've 100% sorted out the falling animation as it has no arc to it. Banshee animation wasn't as complicated but I feel it needed some extra frames to make it a bit smoother. Below are the rough tests. I was also deciding on where to stick with black smoke or change it to white. I would've like to touched up the 2D animation on this scene A LOT but given I had to sort out the 3D background for this scene as well it was a no go. Because Charlotte didn't give me a background for this scene either, David modelled and texture the cliff for me. I added in my tree models and sorted out the camera movement- I would've liked to sort this out sooner so that I could have focus more on making the 2D look good. Below is a test for the camera movement (WARNING) the background flashes a lot. You can also see that I touched up the Banshee animation. |
