The theme we've been given for our next animation project is Bravery. My group consists of Ryan, Tobias, Viola, Emma and myself. First we looked into the meaning of bravery and certain things that might symbolise it. Definition of bravery plural braveries 1:the quality or state of having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty :the quality or state of being brave :courage
Some common symbols of bravery include lions, arrows, circles, dragons, eagles and anchors. One very interesting symbol of bravery is the ant and it symbolises strong workers.
The Medal of Honor is the United States of America's highest and most prestigious personal military decoration that may be awarded to recognize U.S. military service members who distinguished themselves by acts of valor. There are three versions of the medal, one for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force. Everyday acts of courage/bravery:
Inspiration from other Animated Shorts "In a Heartbeat" - Animated Short Film by Beth David and Esteban Bravo A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams. This story follows the bubbly, Timber. As she uses music to unify the denizens of a woodsy owl critter world, segregated by the number of eyes they possess! A young woman’s world transforms when she experiences street harassment / catcalling and how a catcaller gets called out for his wrongful actions. Basically it's about a guy trying to jump across to get to the other side, and it's very dramatic and hilarious. But it the ended it turns out to just be a kid falling off a play set.

The first idea I came up with was inspired by the shot Jump! Jump! (shown in previous post). The rough storyboard shows a lone warrior left on the battle field faced with a giant monster- he braces himself and then leaps to deliver the final below but then it cuts to reality. It's just a fly stuck on a spiders web trying to get free and the spider ends up munching on him. So our character shows bravery when faces the beast but their is a cruel twist in the end. Storyboard and basic character designs Idea 1Again, based off this idea of a false reality- soldiers are trying to get into an enemy base to save one of their troupes (in this case its a teddy bear) but they end up being ambushed. One of the stays behind to sacrifice himself while the others escape. He blows the enemy base up and just as the explosion goes off it cuts to the real world- it's just kids playing in cardboard boxes with cardboard armour. With this idea it would be good to include some sort on implicit meaning. First attempt at storyboard Group animatic Alternative animatic I created which features only one character instead of a group of characters Idea 2Another idea was to have a character- like a lone survivor in a dying/radioactive world. He's a scientist working on a cure but the only way to save the planet is to activate a generator- which will kill him but help nature grow. The group decided to go with the scientist idea. Looking at the rough story I tried figuring out ways to help improve the narrative and help the theme of bravery be more evident. We would have to show where this character is or at least what kind of situation he is in. Showing a decaying city would be a good way of doing this, I thought about even having torn up posters, on some buildings, which where about pollution warnings. The character himself is dress in a hazard suit which suggests he can't be exposed to the air anymore. So would he need air tanks? Maybe he's got no air supply left and doesn't have long left to live anyway, so he has to activate his machine as soon as possible. WIP of character by Ryan A shot showing the framed picture of his family is important. It lets the viewer know that he has lost whats most important to him but he continues to survive and work hard to try and fix the world- this scene is best for tying in the bravery aspect. When the machine gets activated and our character falls to the ground, a plant sprouts next to his hand. This could be good symbolism for where there is death there also comes new life. And in his death he manages to save the planet.
Maybe the moral of the story is to never give up hope. I'm modelling a few things for the scientists lab area. I started by putting together a reference board. I wanted to included some old-school computers and different pieces of technology. I also looked a lot at the concept art for Fallout 4: The game has a post-apocalyptic and retro-futuristic setting, in the aftermath of a global nuclear war in an alternate history timeline mid-22nd century... which is a lot like the world we are doing. So I wanted to see what kind of bits and pieces they had scattered about the place. Reference board
